Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky 1972 and 1974 were the legendary years at Ardbeg for refill hoggies. While 1975 and 76 were notable for mindblowing sherry casks. This leaves 1973, the quirky vintage. Casks from this year are more 'disjointed' than the other more consistent vintages but when they're good they are some of the best Ardbegs ever. This 30yo from Douglas Laing is a coastal driven, medicine cabinet of a dram, an absolute powerhouse, belter of an Ardbeg that scores points for power and focused distillery character. When you taste casks like these you sometimes wonder why other distillers even bother.
